About
Empowering Children in Haiti and the Dominican Republic
In the Dominican Republic, camp is held at Vasca school (sugarcane plantation).
In Haiti, camp is held in an open field in a small town called Pernier. Tarp is used to shield the campers from the hot sun.
Camp Counselors:
All of the paid counselors are Camp Hispaniola alumni. Our mission is to teach the youth of Haiti and Dominican Republic responsibility, and hopefully, they will have opportunities in the future to move up in society.
Where the campers come from:
In the Dominican Republic, the campers are from 7 different bateyes or sugarcane plantations. Most of the campers are the sons or daughters of the sugarcane cutters, who are paid based on the weight of the cane they cut, not hourly. During harvest season, the small income barely sustains them.
In Haiti, the campers are from several neighborhoods around Pernier. Most of their parents are street vendors who earn less than $5 a day.
